Rail OCR: Capture every train in a digital fashion.

Rail OCR automates the inspection and inventory of railcars and containers using high-resolution imaging and AI-powered recognition. As a result container data is linked to railcars in real time, your Terminal Operating system updates instantly and manual handling reduces. The system also captures damage images for condition verification at arrival and departure. As a result operations are streamlined and accuracy is improved.

How it works?

As a train passes through the portal, the system automatically captures high‑resolution images of railcars and containers. It instantly converts these images into structured data and sends them to the PASS software, where the data is matched against pre‑arrival documentation such as EDI 418 messages and bills of lading. If discrepancies arise, any mismatches are immediately flagged for remote inspection

Next, the system transmits all validated results to the Terminal Operating System (TOS), which applies its verification logic before forwarding the final data to the central processing station. Finally, all information is securely logged and shared with the host system for operational use.

Recognition Features

Our solution automatically detects key container and vehicle data with high accuracy.

Reliable hardware

Our Rail OCR system uses robust, industrial‑grade components that ensure long-term reliability and easy integration. The gantry supports high‑resolution cameras positioned to capture detailed images of railcars and containers from multiple angles. These cameras connect to an OCR controller that processes visual data in real time. Additionally, a dedicated connection box houses the power supply, PoE switch, and optional network modules, thereby enabling seamless communication between hardware and software. All without requiring trains to stop or align precisely.

CERTUS Rail OCR offers flexible installation options that suit diverse terminal layouts and operational needs. The portal installation uses a full-frame structure positioned above the railway track, enabling the system to capture comprehensive data from all passing railcars while minimizing ground-level obstruction. Meanwhile, the side pole installation provides a compact and cost-effective alternative, with cameras mounted beside the track. This is ideal for locations with limited space or overhead power lines where a portal setup is not feasible.

FAQ

What is a Rail OCR solution and how does it work?

A Rail OCR (Optical Character Recognition) solution is a technology system that automatically scans and identifies container numbers and railcar details using high-resolution cameras and software. As railcars pass through the OCR portal, cameras capture images of containers, and the system extracts key data such as container ID, ISO codes, and railcar numbers for real-time tracking and logistics automation.

What types of container data can the Rail OCR system capture?

Our Rail OCR system captures a wide range of container data including container ID, ISO type code, hazardous labels and vehicle details. This data is processed instantly and integrated into your logistics or terminal operating system for efficient rail freight management.

Can the system operate in all weather conditions?

Yes, our Rail OCR solution is designed to operate reliably in all weather conditions. The cameras and sensors are housed in weatherproof enclosures and equipped with features like heating and anti-glare technology to ensure consistent performance in rain, snow, fog, and extreme temperatures.

How accurate is the container recognition in your Rail OCR solution?

Our Rail OCR system delivers high accuracy rates, typically above 98%, in container and railcar recognition. Advanced image processing and machine learning algorithms ensure reliable data capture even at high train speeds or in low-light conditions.

Is your Rail OCR solution compatible with existing rail infrastructure?

Yes, the Rail OCR system is designed for seamless integration with existing rail infrastructure. It can be installed alongside standard rail tracks without requiring major modifications, and it supports interoperability with terminal operating systems and logistics platforms.

How does the system handle exceptions?

Using OCR technology in rail logistics improves operational efficiency, reduces manual data entry, enhances accuracy, and enables real-time tracking of containers. It also supports automated gate operations, faster train processing, and better compliance with safety and customs regulations.
